The Department started functioning in 2016. The teachers of the department are engaged in serious intellectual activities. They regularly contribute to many Journals of distinction, and participate in seminars as speakers both at national and international levels. They have important publications to their credit.
Modes of Teaching/Learning
The basic mode of Classroom teaching/learning using the “Chalk and Talk” method is suitably complimented with often and necessary inclusion of ICT tools. Benefits of Flipped learning are harnessed judiciously, wherein, the students (particularly the Post-Graduate ones) are provided study materials in advance enabling them to directly engage in a responsive critical discussion with their teachers. The in-person lectures of the teachers are supplemented with study materials- print out texts, Xerox materials, audio clips, animated videos, website links, pdfs etc. Films and Docu- features are shown, where ever possible, for imparting a more immersive experience. The students are given regular access to books (Primary and Secondary texts) of the Departmental Seminar Library and the Central Library of the College. To ensure embodied learning the department organises seminars and workshops with exclusively students as presenters. Renowned teachers, scholars, social activists, psychological counselors are invited as resource persons broadening the interpretative perspectives while facilitating an interdisciplinary ambience. A special drive in the form of Collaboration classes has been undertaken, wherein, the students of this college and that of Bethune College are made to share a common classroom, fostering a sense of healthy competition and camaraderie, all benefitting from a joint class offered by teachers of both colleges.
Modes of Assessment
The modes of assessment are not restricted to just the final Summative Test conducted under the University mandates. Informal and alternative assessment methods are effectively employed as formative steps. The students are made to prepare PPTs on topics of their choice, also encouraging issues beyond the syllabi, and present them in the classroom. Deft use of technology and innovative uses of resources are the outcome of such practices. Students are continually assessed on written projects, oral deliberations and other performative acts.
Extra-Curricular activities
The Department of English of Gorubathan Govt. College is engaged in a constant pursuit of excellence. It is involved in a wide range of activities that extends the Curriculum beyond the conventional practices of teaching/learning. The department takes up excursions and picnics to nearby spots, affording a day of wholesome enjoyment and informal interaction. The students are inspired to organize functions on occasions like Teachers’ Day, Freshers’ Welcome, Students’ Farewell, and other programmes related to their culture, offering them a platform for honing and show-casing their performative skills.
Objectives
Teaching/Learning in this department is never a linear and mono-directional practice. It is a multi- dimensional continuum, holistic in spirit, where the flow of knowledge and inspiration is an enriching and protean process. Academic learning here is fruitfully supplemented with scopes of organization, platforms for performance, and development of leadership skills; cementing them with the fundamental principles of honesty, responsibility and humanity.
